The room was comfortable, with air conditioning. The staff were very friendly and go out of their way to be helpful. The location is great too; very close to the teatro, restaurants and bars. The breakfast was the best, with lovely sweet and savoury options (lots of variety) and is served quite early so great if you’re going on day trips that start early in the morning. Overall, good value for money, especially for central location.

Manaus is ugly and charmless. The real attraction of Amazonas state is the Amazon Rain Forest itself, so either skip Manaus altogether or 3 days is plenty of time to get the feel of the place. Even the food culture is relatively bland and unexceptional.
If you do decide to stay in the city, go to Presidente Figuereido to see the waterfalls. But most people will be using Manaus as a launching pad for exploring the Amazon.

Manaus as a city is ugly and charmless.
Manaus as a city is ugly and charmless. Except for the downtown area, there is nothing architecturally of interest. It's an industrial working-man's town with very little to recommend it except the surrounding Amazonian forest.
The food is good if you like fish. Otherwise, I had only two meals during my three week stay that were memorable. I was studying Portuguese there, so my teacher and other students made the trip memorable. The people are generally quite lovely, but there is a strong strain of Christian Evangelicalism.

Manaus is an interesting city in the middle of the jungle.
Manaus is an interesting city in the middle of the jungle. To think that if one decides to go in any direction, one will end up in the jungle. It is a city where the only two ways to get to, are by airplane or boat. I am not sure you can get there by car, but if it were possible, I would not try it. The people are friendly and interested in hearing where you came from. I probably would go back for my fourth time. Who knows?

The reason I visited Manaus was to visit the Amazon Rainforest at the end of my trip to Argentina/ Brazil. There is little point visiting Manaus (outside of work / conferences) without visiting the Amazon.

We enjoyed visiting the historic centre of Manaus,...
We enjoyed visiting the historic centre of Manaus, especially the tour of the Opera house (can only visit on a guided tour but it was cheap). We adored the lunch that we had at Caxiri (almost worth visiting Manaus alone, and if you are in Manaus for any other reason you should make every effort to go). We used Manaus as a base for doing a day tour into the jungle - the tour was disappointing with regards the wildlife seen (a tarantula and 3 sloths) during a 2.5hour hike - we saw more wildlife on our visit to Sugarloaf mountain in Rio. Wife loved every minute of being in the water with the Amazonian pink dolphins, which was included in our Amazon day trip. Manaus market was disappointing. Uber was an effective way of getting around the city.

As an European, going to Manaus, the heart of Amazonas state of Brazil, was sort of fulfilling a life time's dream. Therefore I have to admit that details such as "how good was the breakfast?" are absolutely insignificant... (the breakfast was OK, by the way).
I would have gladly used the pool on the roof of the hotel (which is perhaps its main asset because from the height you can have a wonderful panorama of the city) but on the day when I had the availability to do it, a small storm broke out.

Very nicely decorated hotel, with beautiful terrace view of the theatre. In the perfect location for exploring Manaus. We had a lovely stay - staff were welcoming even though we arrived well after midnight. Room was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was delicious and they were even kind enough to share a recipe with me that I requested.
