Overlooking the lighthouse of the Mauro Island, the popular sandy beach of Sardinero is divided by the gardens of Piquio. These magnificent gardens feature Canarian palm trees, blue eucalyptus and colourful flower beds.
Located on the Magdalena Peninsula, the imposing Palacio de la Magdalena has a neoclassic French and English style. Wander around the green gardens and visit the small zoo; home to penguins, seals and other sea animals.
The Cathedral of Santander is a historic landmark in the city centre. Built between the 12th and 14th century, this historic monument consists of two Gothic churches. The Alameda de Oviedo Boulevard is a shopping paradise where you can find everything you need.
Enjoy a walk at the wide seaside promenade, where you will find a big selection of cafés and restaurants to choose from. Booking.com offers a variety of hotels, guest houses and apartments in the area. The international Santander Airport is the only one in Cantabria.

It's a quaint, provincial city in the north of Spain (in fact, the northernmost provincial capital of the country). The Centro Botín, an art center, has great exhibits, though be prepared to endure some provincial attitude towards museums/art by the patrons (the staff, however, were excellent). We stayed as a group of 4 friends (mid 40’s). All of us absolutely loved the city, it was beyond our expectations. We really enjoyed the nightlife, with a huge amount of fantastic bars, cafes and restaurants, all of which were really friendly and helpful towards us brits who have a very limited ability of the Spanish language (we did try!). Everywhere was bustling and lively and we loved how there were numerous pockets of cafes, bars and eateries, and everything wasn’t just centred in one place. We tried all sorts of different foods but definitely enjoyed the plentiful tapas options the most, didn’t eat a bad meal while in the city. During the days we wandered for miles around the local area, took a walk out to Racing Club Santander’s football stadium and visited several of the beaches, all of which where stunning, clean and vast - we were blessed with gorgeous sunshine on our trip which made the beaches and a dip in the sea even better! We all canes away from the city saying what a fantastic place it was and could not recommend it enough. It was so refreshing to visit this side of Spain, that retains its identity and hasn't become a mass tourist destination. English isn’t widely spoken but everyone was so welcoming and friendly that it didn’t make it an issue and we always managed to order what we wanted. The other thing I can’t stress enough is the great value for money, food and drink is so reasonably priced, on average we were paying around €3-€4 for a beer or glass of wine! We were very surprised to find Santander a beautiful city full of great architecture friendly people and modern shops. The whole city felt up market and the beaches were gorgeous. The city is very easy to navigate and the public transport is excellent. This is a very walkable city, tourist information offices dotted about the city making it very easy to access the information you need, we used the one in the bus station initially for information about luggage lockers(we used the ones two floors down which cost four euros exchanged for a token for the day) as we arrived about 8am and needed somewhere to store our cases. Would also recommend the cafe for coffee and something to eat very reasonable priced. Every where is clean and we spent several hours just wandering around before going down to the harbour to sit in the sunshine and enjoy the views before heading to our hotel. l found the local people friendly and helpful as l don't speak much Spanish and was able to explore the city and go on excursions feeling safe as l was travelling alone for the first time on this trip. l would recommend the excursion to the Cantabrian coastal villages including Gaudis Caprice and the Neolithic cave paintings as well as the excursion to the fantastic Picos de Europa. l wouldn't hesitate to go back.Guest review byTerriUnited Kingdom
