A Picturesque River City
Lyon is a gastronomic centre with a pretty architectural façade ranging from antiquity to modern day. Place Bellecour is centrally located between the Saône and Rhône Rivers in the 2nd arrondissement and opens out into major shopping streets.
On the banks of the Saône lies the district of Vieux Lyon, a great example of the Renaissance and full of museums such as the Lyon History Museum. There is a lot going on in the main park of Lyon, Parc de la Tête d'Or, which is home to a zoo of exotic animals as well as various sports facilities and a large lake for boating. Boats of a different description are docked on the banks of the Rhône River; they host parties late into the night.

We did not know much about Lyon before we went.
We did not know much about Lyon before we went. We were only there for 2 full days, and there was much more we could have seen and done, but it is a manageable city, (I would recommend 3 or 4 days to take it all in, or more if you take advantage of day trips in and around Lyon) Even though it is one of France’s largest cities, It doesn’t feel large and overwhelming. When we went (mid June) it didn’t feel overrun with tourists. We spent most of our time outside and walking around the various parts of the city but it has plenty of museums and indoor venues which we could have visited if we had been there longer. It is a lovely city for strolling especially Old Lyons cobbled streets (wear good shoes). It has a good transportation system. Lyon is such a relaxed city which prioritises pedestrians. It has calm atmosphere with beautiful building's great restaurants and is culturally rich with numerous museums. I thoroughly recommend a visit , the transport system is easy to use to get around . I would finally add I found the lyonnaise I spoke to tremendously welcoming . Definitely an under appreciated city. Centrally located and accessible by train or car to dozens of local areas (Geneva, Avignon, Annecy, etc.) with just a short ride. With the Lyon card you have free boat tour on the Saone River, Free tour of the old town and free bus, tram and metro plus discounts in museums, etc “Bouchons” food is not for everyone but the ambiance is unforgettable. You have to talk to the next tables people as you will be squeezed together, we loved it. Armada restaurant, rue du Boeuf in the old town is recommended if you get tired of the “Bouchons”. Excellent food and friendly service. Don’t miss the Bocuse Food Halles, mind boggling array of delectable food, you can have lunch too. Lyon is a very interesting city , a lot to see and do. We visited Beaux Arts gallery which was fantastic and definitely worth visit also there are so many restaurants and bars, one is spoiled for choice. Public transport is very efficient and frequent.
