A Walk Through History
Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Chester is a lovely place to visit, the Cathedral is well worth a visit and a walk round the city wall is a nice way to pass the time. A half hour boat trip telling you a bit about the history is also nice. There are plenty of really good places to eat, whatever your budget. Good amount of options for shopping and dining. The cathedral is a central place and the city is set up around it for a focal or meeting point. Walking tour we had was 90 mins and very informative and at a good time of day. The zoo is fantastic and very reasonable taxi fare and buses go there also.
