FAQs about hotels in Hvar

Echoes of the Age of Empires

Hvar is the largest city on the Croatian island of the same name within the Adriatic Sea. The wildly undulating coastline formed a natural harbour here, a fact which didn’t go unnoticed by the Venetians, who captured it as part of their empire. The Venetian Fortress sits atop a hill and 13th-century ramparts descend to the old town.

Another castle from Napoleonic times is on a different hill offering beautiful views over red roofs towards the offshore Pakleni islands sheltering the port. Ferries link Hvar to neighbouring Brač and Vis islands, Split and Ancona in Italy.

Given the size of the city, the amount of Hvar accommodation is staggering, and Booking.com offers everything from luxury hotels with pools to cheap guest houses and beachfront apartments. Although most beaches are rocky, their scenic setting and warm turquoise waters are still a draw.

At the heart of the city is the largest square in Dalmatia. Restaurants and bars spill out onto its cobbles, ending at St Stephen’s Cathedral with its see-through belltower. Around the same time the cathedral was going up, one of Europe’s oldest theatres was constructed in the waterfront Arsenal. The Loggia is the only remain of the Governor’s Palace, and the Hvar Heritage Museum helps to put all this in context.

We were in Hvar in late April, before things get crazy (or so I hear). It felt like a mini Split, with similar narrow walking streets, a fort above the city, beautiful beaches and very few cars. We loved walking all over the island, visiting the cemetery, the beach, gelato, people watching, etc. We're not so much into the crazy night-life so our timing was perfect, as was Hvar.

Hvar is beautiful but it is expensive.

Hvar is beautiful but it is expensive. Food and drinks are not cheap and the measures of wine and processo you get in most places are really not worth the price tag. It is a lovely place to walk around and we hired a boat for a day to go around the islands which was great there was lots of hidden gems to see and the food and drinks are more reasonable there. We went to a little place on an island called he fisherman’s house. It was so cute with lovely food. We also stopped at mamato bar for a drink which was lovely. The fortress was good to walk around. Overall a nice trip. We were there 3 nights which was plenty. I don’t think I would need more.

Hvar town is easy to walk around and the pathways are even and so well looked after. It is difficult to have a stand out restaurant as they are all really similar. There are lots of choices. The main thing we found was that everything is ultra expensive - for us. The exchange rate from the Australia dollar is very poor to the Euro and everything we purchased was double what we pay in Australia. We were here 3 years ago when the Kuna was still the official currency and prices were so much more reasonable. Having said all that it is a magic place. The Croatian people are always so friendly, easy going and happy to help.

We loved the vibe of the island, found some wonderful restaurants, especially loved Val Marina for great service and delicious Mediterranean food. The highlight for us was our speedboat tour through Kabina Boats. A wonderful day with great and knowledgeable guides. Highly recommended.

Visiting Hvar in March was a wonderful experience.

Visiting Hvar in March was a wonderful experience. The island was quiet and peaceful, with no crowds, making it perfect for exploring at a relaxed pace. The weather was mild, great for walking along the coast and enjoying the historic old town. While some places were still closed for the off-season, there were plenty of great restaurants open and the calm atmosphere made the trip feel even more special.

    Attractive old harbour town.

Attractive old harbour town. We gather that it is a fashionable destination for yachting and boating but there is not a lot to do otherwise. In mid-October it had an end of season feeling though restaurants were still open. Most attractions in Stari Grad had closed.

Amazing!!! Stayed as two couples and this was beautiful central location run by a family, felt like I was staying at someone’s home. Communication excellent start to finish, met us at the port, and the tour organised through hotel for a boat trip was our favourite day in hvar! A must! Natalia also made as breakfast early specially on the last day due to catching an early ferry, nothing was too much trouble. Warm, clean, big rooms and amazing breakfast! Thank you so much! We will return for sure.

The hotel was great, the bathroom and room where large the outdoor patio was amazing but what made it more amazing were the views. Parking was easy, we were able to shower after are check out time no problem. The women that work there were friendly, informative, kind and great hosts. I will be recommending the property to anyone I know going to Hvar Town. The location was fab and as a woman I felt completely safe!

Loved this hotel! Pool area was lovely with a great vibe and music playing in the pool bar. We had a balcony with a sea view and loved sitting out each night enjoying the view. The hotel is up a hill but the walk is fine and even welcomed after a big meal/gelato in the town! The breakfast had a great selection and was very tasty. Nice to have a pool area to chill at in the otherwise very busy Hvar
