Stunning Split stands proudly on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, and due to its great climate is called the Mediterranean Flower. It features eclectic architecture, spectacular views and delicious cuisine.
Split is centred around the ancient Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian, a magnificent building constructed at the beginning of the 4th century AD and boasting limestone and marble towers, columns and courtyards. It lies in a bay decorated with white sails of yachts, as sailing is definitely Split’s big thing!
The city is full of architectural gems, one of which is St. Duje’s Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in the world, built in 305 AD and combining both Roman and Catholic influences. Nearby Varoš is a must-see, one of the city’s oldest parts, full of charming streets and beautiful houses.
Make sure you visit the Bačvice Beach and the Riva promenade, popular with locals and full of cafés and palm trees. While on the hunt for local specialities, try soparnik - wood-fired dough filled with vegetables - or local soda drinks Pipi and Orela.

Plenty of things to do and see in Split and the surrounding area. We were glad we had a car, which we picked up in Zadar, as this gave us more flexibility. We went over for a wedding but could have stayed longer - we might well go back late September and visit some of the islands.

June 2025: Split was lovely in the early morning before the cruise ship tours arrived. It was busy and crowded as the day progressed. Plenty of places to get a gelato or sit along the waterfront for a drink or food.
Diocletian Palace is the highlight of Split with the old town built within its walls. The beaches are lovely if you venture out of the city and the tours to the islands are a good way to see more of the idyllic surrounds.
It’s easy to get around and Ubers/Taxis are not that expensive and are in abundant supply. Most things are walking distance.
As a solo traveller I like to do some tours - it’s a great way to meet others and see places of interest.

Split is great port to visit - from there you can take ferry’s to islands and buses for day trips - buses go frequently and are very good - however the bus station there is beyond disgusting and so is the one in Makarska - such a shame considering the amount of people that come through there from all over the world. Are they not embarrassed - Surely they can slap a can of paint personally I would use a bulldozer -

Our stay in Croatia at the Prima hotel was amazing.
All the staffs were amazing, the location was perfect as it was in the city centre.
I would like to especially thank Maja for helping us so much during our stay. She recommended us a lot of food places to eat and tourist sites to visit. She went above and beyond for us, what a credit she is to your team. Thank you Maja!
Croatia is beautiful place and so are the people.
We love you Croatia!
A really nice hotel, with competent and friendly staff. food is excellent (best breakfast in Croatia!), rooms are well equipped and the pool, spa and gym are welcome. wifi is not the strongest, and the location is a little too far to walk into town for anyone with mobility impairment. Overall, a great hotel though, and would definitely stay again.
We used this hostel as part of a backpacking trip across Croatia. The hotel itself is far from the city centre but there is a bus stop right outside and the local public transport is great, so no issues.
There was AC! Which is a rarity at many of the hostels in Croatia.
We didn’t try the food. The hostel did have washing and laundry facilities.
Great location, great air conditioning. Fairly spacious. Few minute walk into the centre
Be aware of lots of steps, just like most of Croatia. Also, no parking due to being in the old town
The location was perfect in the city center close to old town - takes approx 2 min by walking. Clean and cosy. Located in a calm square. Lovely little croatian hood!
