Welcoming Galway is a small city with fantastic nightlife and an infectious atmosphere. Outside of the Galway Arts Festival, there’s still plenty of live music in the Irish pubs to get the party started.
The Galway Races at Ballybrit Race Course west of Galway Airport attract a good crowd, as does Eyre Square, a green space with flags of previous ruling families who gave it its nickname - City of Tribes. To the south are cobbled streets housing brightly coloured shops and restaurants.
Sights in Galway include its cathedral and city museum which offers an interesting insight into the history of the city and Ireland. Lynch’s Castle is the last remaining 17th-century merchant house, and the Spanish Arch is a small section of city walls by the Corrib River, linking Galway Bay to huge Loch Corrib. Where river and ocean meet is Claddagh Park, a great spot for a picnic with a view.
Further around the coast is Salthill Promenade, home to Atlantaquaria, Ireland’s national aquarium, focussing on sealife off Irish shores. It’s a Christmas Day tradition to jump from Blackrock Diving Tower nearby into the icy Atlantic Ocean, though you may well spot some wag giving it a go.
Booking.com has an excellent range of Galway hotels, apartments and B&Bs to complete your stay.

We only stayed 3 nights, wish it had been for longer as it was a long day from N. Ireland to get there but the bus, train, train, tram, train and then a taxi was excellent - I wished we'd stayed longer. Loved the street with all the buskers and live-music pubs and eateries - very colourful. Hop on/off bus was great to see more of the area, to see long road mentioned in the song Galway Girl. JFK in the park, he gave money to help build the Cathedral (glass from the Vatican allegedly). People still went to University during the famine ! Fabulous coach and boat trip to Aran Islands - a long day but worth it. I want to return to spend more time in Doolin which is the place to be for live music our guide told us. Beautiful. I got an Aran cardigan too, and a Cloddagh thumb ring as mementos. Definitely going back and for longer next time and will use this accommodation again as it's excellent value for money plus we saved money eating there every night.

Galway is a great place to visit.
Galway is a great place to visit. The long walk is lovely and the city itself is compact and walkable. We spent one day walking around town ticking off all the big ticket items. Easily done. Nice to visit

Great place and so much to see and do.
Great place and so much to see and do. You must go to 'Trad on the Prom'. A wonderful show with first class singers, music and dance. Take a Doolin Ferry ride to the Cliffs of Mohar, or drive along the Great Atlantic Way. A wonderful Resturant that is a break from the typical (albeit delicious ) pub fare is the La Collina Resturant on Salt Hill Road.
Excellent food, pasta made fresh every day. Excellent wine selection, reservations required. We also enjoyed the Atlantic Aquarium, fun for kids and very educational for all. I just can't say enough!!

I went to Galway planning to cycle along the Wild Atlantic Way where there are beautiful beaches and access to bogland off the main road. I cycled from Galway to Bearna before giving up and returning. There is no provision for cyclists on this stretch and it is frankly dangerous. To add to the fast driven traffic there were huge puddles - very hazardous for a cyclist as these can hide potholes and drains. I tried other routes and found them equally dangerous. Salthill, where I stayed, was a pleasure. Lovely small restaurants and cafes and excellent swimming at Ladies Beach and Blackrock.
