Academic and Artistic Greatness
An artistic gem, Padua (or Padova in Italian) seamlessly combines awe-inspiring heritage and a modern vibe. Counting Galileo among its former tutors, the University has the world’s oldest UNESCO World Heritage-listed botanical garden.
Across the road is huge Prato della Valle, a green square with a canal lined by 78 statues, and home to a Saturday market. A market is also held in squares near to Palazzo della Ragione whose multi-levelled arches and vaulted wooden ceiling are an impressive sight. Cobbled, porticoed streets lead to the finely-crafted Gran Loggia and clock tower.
Every church has incredible décor, but the most famous is Saint Anthony of Padua, boasting the bones of the saint, an impressive 7 cupolas and 4 cloisters. The square in front has a statue by Donatello. Padua Cathedral's simple exterior houses amazing frescoes inside the baptistery by Giotto, creator of the jewel in Padua’s crown – the Scrovegni Chapel. His 14th century frescoes there have been meticulously restored to be as vibrant as the day they were painted.
The closest airport is Venice Marco Polo, but before you head there from your Padua hotel, apartment or B&B take time to enjoy the narrow streets around Palazzo del Bò or the Jewish district.

My wife and I spent 5 nights in Padua. We visited neighbouring towns of Vincenza and Verona. A lot of history to explore. Make sure you have good walking shoes, the cobblestone roads can be hard on the feet. Plenty of shopping and excellent dining establishments. We were quite surprised with the many features, buildings and public places in Padova. Public transport, especially the tram was amazing. There are many restaurants serving good quality meals. Definitely a place worthy of visit. Scrovegni Chapel must be booked well in advance if you want to view Giotto paintings. The basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua is amazing. (Although the restaurants are opening at 20:00 hours, I'd like to eat earlier. More healthy. On Saturday, there is this market and the shops are open till 20:00 hours some even later.
