The Jewel in the Sicilian Crown
As you admire crystal-clear turquoise seas from a Taormina piazza swathed in vibrant pink blossom, you could be forgiven for thinking that you were in paradise. The stunning location of this picturesque town is its crowning glory.
However, it’s not its only glory. Surrounded by trees just below the main town, the Greek Theatre is also a triumph. Its largely intact seating offers wonderful views across the stage towards Mount Etna fuming away in the distance. Spine-tingling summer performances are still held here, and several of the town’s bars also offer live music.
Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of Taormina, from Piazza Corvaja to the 13th-century cathedral, and houses many shops and cafés. Midway along is Piazza IX Aprile, whose clock tower and church are overlooked by a rocky hill topped with a castle.
A cable car runs from the town down to the beautiful Taormina beaches (where the train station is also found). At the centre of the W-shaped bay is little Isola Bella, an island nature reserve. To the south-west is the long stretch of sand at Giardini-Naxos, and north is the bay by Mazzaró.
As you would expect of Sicily’s most beautiful resort, there is no shortage of Taormina accommodation on Booking.com, including 5-star hotels on the beach, town centre apartments and luxury B&Bs.

We loved walking along Corso Umberto. Cafe Etna was a great place for granita. We did a boat trip from giardini naxos which was fantastic and highly recommended. We also went up to Mount Etna which was another great experience. The Greek theatre is worth a visit and the coastline is spectacular. The city is way too crowded, and while it is nice, it is not that nice either. Most shops and restaurants feel like tourist traps. The beaches are dirty and almost completely privatized. Sadly Taormina has become another charming city to succomb to mass tourism. The main street has mostly shops you will find anwhere in the world (to a few exceptions) and too many restaurants. Shopping is not our priority when visiting cities or villages. You can do that at your local mall or even on line. Regretfully, we can't recommend staying at Taormina. Though we had a good time, it has been overhyped. It's OK for a one day trip...maybe... Taormina is a lovely city with lots to see and easy access...
Taormina is a lovely city with lots to see and easy access to Etna and other local sites. The city is built on a hill and a level of fitness is required to get around on foot, lots of steps up the hills. Local bus runs regularly to help you get around. Beautiful little town.
Beautiful little town. I was there to attend a language school (Babilonia), so was there for 8 nights. The restaurants are great. Town is super busy though. Was there in early May. Was told it gets much busier for summer. I would definitely return!Guest review byWendyCanada - 8.0
