The staff were wonderful. We had a panic with a lost passport, and they went out of their way to find it! The hotels loctation is excellent, almost in the old part of the city and easy to get to from the station. The Japanese breakfast is very good. Can't recommend this hotel highly enough.

The best thing about the hotel is the location. Walking distance (5 minutes) from the old town and many restaurants and shops. 7-Eleven supermarket accross the street. And also nice that the hotel has an onsen (Japanese hot bath)

Lovely budget hotel that provided good value for money in a central location half way between the train station and old town. My room was comfortable and had a private bathroom with bath tub, and the included breakfast was simple but satisfying.

JAS Hotel is very well located for exploring Takayama. The staff were friendly and welcoming and our room was clean and comfortable. There are Male and Female onsen and the shower facilities are located within the onsen. The rooms and facilities at the hotel are fairly basic but it is excellent value for money.

The room was very pleasant and a good size. The bed was also a good size and quite comfortable. The onsen on the top floor was excellent with both indoor and outdoor hot baths. The location of the hotel was an easy walk from the main railway station in Takayama.

Takayama is a great contrast to big cities like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. You feel more relaxed because you can walk almost everywhere and the streets are far less crowded. The surrounding countryside is beautiful with tall, evergreen and bamboo forests and many rushing streams and even small waterfalls. I'm very glad I decided to wander off the beaten path to stop here because Takayama had a unique distinctive vibe that I loved.

Great for wandering around the old town, morning markets and various shrines and museums. Also a good base for exploring the surrounding area. Definitely go up to Shinhotaka ropewalk for great views of the mountains and a quite long, but scenic, bus ride from Takayama
If you are looking for a change from the wonderful Japanese food that you can find in many of the local restaurants try the Centre4 Hamburgers or Pizzeria Serico. Both were exceptional for service, quality and good value for money.

Takayama was too full of fellow tourists when we arrived, and a bit too much of a tourist town - despite its charming size, machiya-style downtown and a lovely setting. I'd only return, or recommend it, in the quietest off-season time possible.

It's difficult to get here but it's worth it.
It's difficult to get here but it's worth it. Not so much Takayama itself, but for what you can see around Takayama. You have to use the Nohi bus system to buy tickets for day trips outside of Takayama. We spent one afternoon in Takayama and one day at the Folk Village, then hiked up to the castle ruins.
Our third day we took a trip to the Shinhotaka Ropeway (cablecar). It was so fun to be in the Japanese Alps (though there was too much snow still there at the end of May to hike a lot, at the highest points). We then we visited an Onsen right outside of the last bus stop before the ropeway. It was amazing. Try the Onsen even if you don't think you'll like it, it was so relaxing.
The food was good. Hida beef is some of the best in the world so be sure and try it. Also the Hida yogurt was so good! It was a lot easier to get into restaurants here than in Tokyo. Though you will need a reservation for Center 4 Burgers.
The train ride to get here and the bus ride to the top of the mountains are both exceptionally beautiful and could be their own event in and of themselves!

Beautiful country vibe and very relaxing.
Beautiful country vibe and very relaxing. We stayed 2 nites but could have stayed longer. We went to Gokayama and Shirakawago for the day, which was great. But I felt we could have stayed a bit longer to enjoy the relaxing vibe of the area and maybe visited other mountain areas.

We were there 10 days as we travel slowly and work online - honestly that wasn't even enough! There's so much to do in Takayama, the old town is lovely, and it also serves as a great base to explore surrounding areas including Shirakawa and Kamikochi, the ropeway, hikes and onsen towns. Absolutely loved it.

Their dinner is a pure kaiseki experience which includes local Hida beef. Breakfast is also traditional, served early in the morning. You can enjoy a panoramic view of the Takayama village from the entrance of the hotel. The property has an Onsen (public, open air bath) which closes around 23:00 and you can also book a massage. We stayed in a Japanese room with a cypress-wood bathtub and futon beds which were prepared during our dinner. The World Heritage village of Shirakawa-go can be easily reached by bus (50 min).

We absolutely enjoyed the entire ryokan experience. The Japanese dinner and breakfast were delicious. They provided us with yukata to wear during our stay. Our room was amazing, offering a stunning view of the river and Takayama Old Town. We also loved the onsen, and they have local beauty products available to use in the onsen. Additionally, the free shuttle bus was very convenient.

The ryokan is perfect for a Japanese experience. It is a 3 min walk from the station. The staff is friendly and can speak english. They let us choose between three different types of breakfast and explained everything perfectly during check in. The private onsen is indoor and good equipped (extra charge).
Fantastic for a ryokan experience with onsen!

This was a true authentic ryokan experience. Lovely staff, perfect location and delicious dinner two nights. We slept well on double futons and enjoyed the Onsen ( sitting outside in a warm tub while it was raining was so relaxing!) We will come again if we return to Takayama!

Super nice ryokan in Takayama. It probably needs some updating, but it is still a place i would recommend. Rooms are big and you sleep in futons, but on mattresses! (Unlike other traditional japanese guesthouses...). The bath is clean and super nice.
