Essaouira has developed from a hippie hangout to become a top Morocco beach resort with good surfing conditions. Its 18th-century medina is almost European in feel and narrow streets lead under low arches past fragrant spice stalls and local artisans selling everything from wood carvings to faience pottery.
Dotted around the souk are many traditional-style riads on Booking.com, hidden behind tiled façades and blue doors. Other Essaouira accommodation options include luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap apartments, and B&Bs near Essaouira Airport.
Also bright blue are the rowing boats bobbing gently in small harbours sheltered by the Scala of the Port, a wide walkway with ramparts through which several historic cannons poke out. At the end is the Citadel, a small fortress overlooking Mogador Island - the largest of the Iles Purpuraires, so-called for the purple shells found in their rocks that were once used to produce dyes for Roman senator togas.
Another fortress – Bordj El Berod – lies in pieces on the long, sandy beach south of the marina. In the opposite direction the coastline is more rocky and lined by the Scala of the Kasbah, the crenellated walls protecting the medina. Horseriding and camel safaris are available on the beach and you can also visit a Berber village inland.

Watch out for the blue and white seafood restaurants in the dockyards.
The facilities look quite dirty and food handling is poor.
They offer to allow you to choose your fresh seafood for between 20dh and 35dh per 250g but if you have a mixed tray, they weigh it at the highest value.
They will then round it off to 200dh with bread, salad and drink included. This makes a few sardines and prawns very expensive.
There are much better value seafood restaurants in the town.

Lovely beach, the fishing port and the adjacent restaurants displaying their catches ready for cooking is a sight to behold. The Medina, which is captivating, day or night, was surprisingly hassle-free with tourists largely unpressured by street vendors and beggars. But the overarching view is one of calm in the city, much more laid back than, say, Agadir.

Essaouira was my favorite city of those I visited on my trip to Morocco. The medina is easy to navigate and a fun place to shop, the climate is cooler than inland, the beach and harbour are pretty and interesting, the people are friendly, and it's a photographer's dream.

Essaouira is a beautiful and relaxed coastal city with a unique charm. The historic Medina is full of life, yet less hectic than in other Moroccan cities — perfect for strolling, shopping, and discovering local crafts. The harbor and city walls are great for exploring, and the ocean views are stunning. There are lots of nice cafés and restaurants, and the fresh seafood is a highlight. The vibe is very friendly and safe, and the city feels welcoming for solo travelers as well. A great place to unwind and enjoy Morocco’s Atlantic coast!

We came to Essaouira after two weeks self driving and found it super cruisey here. It must be the sea and cooler temperatures. Although there are loads of tourists, you don't seem to get hassled by store owners and the pace is easy. Fresh fish off the boats is a must as is the Jewish Museum especially if the guy on the door gives you the background to this old merchant's house turned working Synagog and museum. Some good contemporary art galleries here too.

This was the second time I’ve stayed at this hotel in the past 6 months. The location is perfect. Nice comfy room and bed. Staff are very polite and attentive. Breakfast was good. Parking was available just outside the hotel. View from my balcony overlooking the beach was superb especially the sunsets. Overall nice place to stay for your visit, I have no complaints.

Emma & Giles and their team are lovely, thoughtful people which their hospitality reflects. Giles gave us a lot of useful advice on Essaouira; Emma’s interior decoration skills are worthy of a 5 star hotel and the breakfast provided was extensive and very high quality.
The security guard (whose name I didn’t get) helped us fix our broken car.
