This is a unique location in Mexico.
This is a unique location in Mexico. I definitely loved the intense animal life, the potential for peace, and the jungle. Unfortunately the lake seemed to be getting some kind of thick foam that would wash up on the beach and I saw no fish, which made me unhappy about the level of pollution. They also allowed motor boats, and although there were not many being used during my stay, it seemed like a clear path to destroying the natural habitat that people visit to experience. I definitely got the peaceful vibe that I wanted when I booked a stay in Bacalar, but my friend who stayed in a different hotel had to switch to another place because there was a wedding party happening under her room so enjoyment of a tranquil lake setting is not guaranteed if that is what you are seeking.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Bacalar is a great town and place to spend a few days. There is a very calm and peaceful atmosphere around. The lake is beautiful but the best way to explore it is on a boat (one half-day trip was enough for us). Bacalar is a lovely, laid back town with a great atmosphere set on the edge of the massive lagoon. It has lots of good restaurants and cafes and there's lots to do both on and off the lagoon. The water is beautiful.
The water is beautiful. Salty sea water gets a little tiring after a few weeks. It was such a pleasure to be able to dive and swim in "a lake." We took our own inflatable kayak and simply enJOYed!!! Great coffee shops with DELICIOUS coffee. Restaurants were good but then most in Mexico are. Nothing out of the ordinary there. I may well be back before I leave the Yucatan ... but ... there are still SO MANY MORE wonderful places to visit. It truly was the "lake" effect that grabbed me.
