Sauna and plunge pool were a great addition and we liked having cooking facilities available. Very cool and cosy area to spend the night.

The perfect location for a quiet, peaceful stay right in the middle of the Nikau Forest!. The beds were comfy and there was everything you needed in the kitchen.
We stayed in Ruru Lodge, plenty of room for me and my friend in our bedroom. A good size lodge which is a little tired, the bathrooms need an upgrade. Really good value for money. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Nature at its best!
Nature at its best! We visited the Pancake Rocks twice, once at low tide and once at high tide, to see the contrast. It took us about 45 minutes each time but it was worth it to us. Wish we could come back in a million years to see what has disappeared due to erosion, earthquakes, etc.
There is also a very good restaurant--Punakaiki Rocks--in the village, which has interesting decorations and tasty food.

Well worth a visit.
Well worth a visit. Punakaiki rocks is a must to see. free parking and no entrance fees. The walk is easy with only a few rock stairs to climb towards the end. The views are simply stunning. We could also see dolphins.

Lovely little seaside town, with fascinating pancake rocks and spectacular coastal scenery. Wonderful walks up into the country behind - particularly along the river valleys/gorges.
Rather isolated, with no grocery shops or fuel available. The roads in and out are very narrow, winding and prone to blockage due to landslip. Plan ahead for disruption.
There is a pub with good meals (at a price), and the cafe beside the visitor centre was a good breakfast spot.

We only stayed for two days in Punakaiki and that time frame was perfect for us. Our prime reason for staying in Punakaiki was to visit the Pancake Rocks and this natural feature was outstanding. Absolutely fascinating. We visited a couple of times - once at high tide and the other time at low tide. High tide was more impressive because the blowhole was really showing off but both times were jaw dropping.
Truman Track was a short beautiful walk. We strolled along Fox Beach which was wonderful and we also did a quick visit to Punakaiki Cavern but that was not really our thing so did not venture in too far.

A stunning day at Punakaiki, the board wak overlooking the sea gives great views of the rock formations, the sea crashing and the bush. There is a wonderful new information centre nearly completed with helpful staff to give local advice on walks etc. Such a great stop lots to see and do.

Great location. Superb accommodation and outstanding decor. Fantastic stay amongst the flora and forna. Only wish we had stayed longer. Would definitely recommend. The outside balcony on the first floor sipping a glass of wine amongst the trees made it an outstanding stay. Could go on for ever. Everyone don't hesitate about booking this accommodation. Many thanks Punakaiki Tree House. This will stay in our memories forever. Jan & Gerwyn
Perfect little place to crash out and enjoy the Punakaiki village, well located and it was nice to have the restaurant also near by. Also there’s a cellphone tower right there on the street… so we had a perfect connection and super fast internet (didn’t need the Wi-Fi).
