They had a room last minute. The room is fine but expensive, and breakfast is extra. But if you are looking for a good location, it is fine, clean, modern.

The apartment was ok, but the location and access to it was not.

You can use Papeete as a base for exploring other parts of French Polynesia. We took the short ferry ride to Moorea and stayed a few days - definitely a worthwhile trip. We also took a half-day trip around Tahiti that took in the highlights of the natural beauty of the island as well as some historical sites.

The Bora Bora Lounge near the port offers luggage storage for about $6 US per day. Doesn’t matter how big the suitcase is.
The best thing we did in Pape’ete was an around the island tour with Lydia’s Tours of Tahiti. We saw so much and Lydia drives you around in a very new, comfortable, air conditioned van. She is a wealth of information about the history, culture and everyday life of Tahiti.

Papeete is a lot like Honolulu.
Papeete is a lot like Honolulu. Very busy city with beautiful beaches a drive away. The city is not good for walking as there are not always sidewalks so you are forced to walk in the busy street. The sidewalks that were available are rutted with numerous tripping hazards.
The majority of local people were very friendly.

We would have liked to stay longer in Papeete and environs.
We would have liked to stay longer in Papeete and environs. The park along the waterfront is beautiful, the restaurants good, the locals welcoming. The central market is great fun. It was neat to see the fresh fish and fruits and vegetables and there were many vendors sellling everything from leis to pearls! Wish we had had more time to see more of the island.

When you fly from the US, planes land in the evening.
When you fly from the US, planes land in the evening. You're going to spend at least one night in Tahiti. When you come back, the planes leave late. You're really temping fate (and Air Tahiti) if you don't fly in a day early, so you're going to spend another night there.
The captive audience is not great for the quality of the hotels or the business. Did I forget to mention the cruise ships? Schedule you time around them if you can.
There's lots of restaurants in Papeete, most of them mediocre at best. The national dish, Poisson Cru (raw tuna, cucumber and stuff in coconut milk), is excellent but that's the beginning and the end of great food in French Polynesia.
On the other hand, the place is remarkably clean (opposite of Latin America) and the locals are really sweet (different from Hawaii).

Other than flying into the airport and overnighting, I don't recommend the city. I spent two nights as I needed one day to regroup and get organized after flying from the States. I did walk as I didn't have a car, nor wanted to bother with a taxi, to the downtown area. Walking along the oceanfront, off of the main road was great as it was beautiful, well-kept, and so interesting. I loved watching locals paddling just offshore.
An interesting stop is the Robert Wan Pearl Museum. A bit outdated but still worthwhile.
Next time, I would spend one night and get on the ferry the next day to Moorea.

Heiata met us at the airport and settled us in at 3.00 am! The accommodation was just perfect for Papeete, private, close to the town, very comfortable. It was great having our own facilities for cooking. An ideal location and set up for 3 days.
Very new and clean hotel. Super comfy beds and facilities. Had dinner in the restaurant which was nice and the staff were super friendly. About 15 mins from the airport so worked well for a 1 night stay in between flights.
Good location near supermarket plaza and next to nice hotel for happy hour or meals. Lovely terraces with views over Papeete harbour. Recently refurbished so clean and tidy.
Fantastic location and property. The owner was very helpful and arranged airport transfers for us. Pool was lovely. Great place to spend a few nights exploring Papeete
