Staff were very friendly, special mention to Sofia in Guest Services she was very friendly, very knowledgable and accomodating always looking for ways to help and improve your visit in Madeira. The hotel is in a great location close to shops and restaurants and only about 10 minutes away in a taxi from Funchal centre. There's also buses regularly going past on the main road with great connections. The view from the hotel is fantastic as it's right by the coast, very beautiful!

FAQs about hotels in Funchal

Portuguese Charm and Island Capital

Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It is an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as its slopes and colourful towns.

Founded in 1424, its position allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbour, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.

With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos of Madeira. Accommodation located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, is also available for those wanting to avoid the rush.

Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.

Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guest house, Booking.com offers a wide range of Funchal accommodation.

It is a really busy and chaotic city. Traffic is horrible, but old part of city is really nice. There is a lot of interesting spots and gardens. Whole city is quite green and full of plants, trees and flowers.

Charming, Lively, and Full of Character – Funchal is a Gem

Charming, Lively, and Full of Character – Funchal is a Gem Funchal completely won me over with its perfect blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and laid-back charm. The city is clean, safe, and walkable, with stunning views at every turn—from the lush hillsides to the sparkling coastline. The food scene is incredible, especially the fresh seafood and local specialties, and the people are genuinely warm and welcoming. Whether strolling through the old town, exploring the local markets, or taking a cable car up to Monte, there’s always something beautiful or interesting to experience. Funchal strikes the perfect balance between relaxation and adventure—an absolute must-visit.

Had around 3 days in Funchal, which was about right.

Had around 3 days in Funchal, which was about right. Did all the touristy things, restaurants were good and good value, seems a very safe place to walk around. Getting around it easy by bus or taxi. Be prepared for some decent walking if you are exploring outside of the centre as Madeira is hilly... Just because the cable car takes you up high, there is still plenty of work to be done around the various gardens but well worth it.

Lovely city with lots going on during early June: International fireworks competition, excellent cultural events and displays, amazing views and a very broad offering of places to eat and drink from very inexpensive to Michelin Star standard. Bus system is very regular, efficient and value for money. Buy a ticket that covers your length of stay. The climate is a good balance of 'hot' sunshine, short periods of cloud cover and a pleasant cooling wind which does not drop the temperature too much even overnight.

Funchal is an attractive city, fairly quiet and not too many tourists (I visited in April). Good for walking around. Not much night life. The municipal park and other gardens were beautiful. Santa Catarina Park is a great spot for a picnic, on a hillside overlooking the old town and out to sea. The Mercado dos Lavradores, a large fruit, vegetable and flower market, is worth a visit. If you are into gardens then the Monte Palace gardens are a must - a cable car takes you 2,000ft up the mountainside to beautiful terraced gardens with water birds and artwork and great views. For those who like sailing, I can recommend a trip on the Santa Maria de Colombo, a replica of Columbus's flagship for his historic discovery of the Americas in 1492.

Funchal is beautiful like other cities in Portugal with patios and lots of history but on a smaller scale. Palace Botanical Gardens at top of gondola was beautiful! Lots of places to see so going on a guided tour is best. If you rent a car choose automatic to avoid stalling on the many hills. Highways are very smooth and have lots of tunnels to get you to the other side of the island in less than an hour!

Everything! Hotel was in a comfortable location, very quiet surroundings and still within 15 by walk from the old town. Super helpful Man at the reception desk (sorry I don't remember the name). Upon arrival - as this was our first night at Madeira - he made us a complete briefing of what to see and how to make it in the most relaxed way (weather portal, trials information). Car parking is a blessing (+ driving into it, felt a bit like entering Batman's hideout - a bit cramped hideout, but still cool <3)

The Babosas Village is the ideal place to stay if you want to see Madeira but you want to avoid the insanely touristic centre of Funchal. While a lot of tourists come up here during the day, at breakfast and dinner Babosas is an oasis of peace and relax. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and very patient with those who do not speak Portuguese. The rooms are comfortable and quiet, the breakfast is rich and changes every day. If I had to visit Funchal again, I would go back to Babosas.

Beautiful quinta located near to the old town, with a lovely garden surrounded by a banana plantation, passion fruit and papaja trees, looking at the ocean. The owner and his family were extremely friendly and helpful and told us a lot about Madeira, Funchal and the history of the property. A nice bakery and small grocery store at walking distance.
