Located on the north bank of the Rio de la Plata, the city of Montevideo is Uruguay’s capital, largest city and main harbour and economic hub. The old town is very interesting, though can feel a bit edgy on quieter nights of the week (Monday and Tuesday). The tourist office provided information, but only about the old town, and not about Palermo and Pocitos, which are equally fascinating, with lovely buildings. Great place to combine beach with city holiday. Something for everyone. Safe and beautiful kind considerate Uruguayans. Huge and smart shopping mall less than 10 mins walk. Beautiful, impressive architecture and historic buildings, but mostly deteriorating with trash and litter and homelessness. Outside of the old city there are more modern places but they all suffer from the same general lack of care.
