A fabulous city. We loved the arts precinct.
A fabulous city. We loved the arts precinct. Found great pubs and restaurants. Amazing architecture everywhere we looked. We knew a little about the history and were particularly interested in the Chinese Museum, where we learned heaps more. We will definitely return for a much longer visit.Guest review byArleen - Review score

Enjoy walking through the stunning autumn colours in your winter coat as you soak in the natural beauty all around. The local eateries are a short drive from local accommodation and are popular with both locals and tourists alike. It's the perfect weekend or week long getaway destination. I'll be back!Guest review byThomas - Review score

In my opinion, Castlemaine is a peaceful, sleepy town but with a hidden side. Once inside Saff's cafe at 11 am there are some pretty interesting characters, all of whom appeared animated and deep in conversations with their group including a group of 3 elders wearing black clothes with black hats (not witches variety). It made me think of a time when you could turn up somewhere without feeling judged and be accepted for who you are. You're bound to meet some interesting people! You can find loose leaf teas at any cafe, not just plastic filled tea bags..Wonderful to see difference and individuality again, Soooo refreshing! So many churches to visit, a lovely Botanical Gardens to walk, good food places, excellent public transport or car. Not much traffic to negotiate!Guest review bySonya fennellAustralia - Review score
The hotel was beautiful.
The hotel was beautiful. The railway station was magnificent. Both definitely worth seeing. Maryborough is easy to get around. We ate at Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Excellent service at this restaurant and food excellent too. All in all a lovely place to visit.Guest review byCatherineAustralia - Review score

The resort was clean and tidy, although could use with some updating, it felt a little tired. The spa in the room was by far the highlight, the view looking out the window was peaceful. We were excited to go to the pool and spa area as it looked so good on the website, but we were disappointed when we got there that the spa had been drained and was not in use. We already knew that the day spa area itself was closed for renovations so this just added to the disappointment, and I'm not sure if this was all factored into the cost or not as the room rate was ok but could have been less considering lots of facilities were not in use. Also it seemed odd that the pool area closes at 5pm when the staff go home, bit of a rush to have a swim as check in is 3pm. The meal at the restaurant was delicious but very expensive, I got the steak which was an extra $10 and then sides another additional cost, I felt the steak was overpriced once you added sides. The entrée lettuce gems were divine, and we thought the rolls with entrée would have been a nice local sour dough or similar, but they were just the regular oval shaped rolls that we get at the local supermarket at home. The wait staff at the restaurant were fantastic and very welcoming and friendly. I would suggest getting an upper floor room as you can hear the spa above when you are in a ground floor room, it wasn't a huge deal but just a tip for those who are unsure whether to pay the extra cost, I think it would be worth it and I hope we return sometime in the future and we will do the same. The area is gorgeous, so many great little stops along the way from Ballarat, and Woodend is a cute little town. As the restaurant at the resort wasn't serving breakfast, we went into town to Paysanne cafe and give it 5 stars.Guest review byTraceyAustralia - Review score

A great place to stay for a visit to the Victorian goldfields area; easy access to all towns in the area and a pleasant town. Some very good dining venues with reasonable prices and some old world charm.Guest review byKenAustralia
