We booked the hotel Because the classic motorbike road races were on, so having beer on tap in the lovely rooms was a pleasant surprise! We also got free 2 hour use of the wellness centre, although we didn’t make full use of it. The5 of us had booked the 4 beer baths with more beer on tap on arrival, so great fun. Had dinners at the restaurant which is part of the complex, which were delicious and great value. The Lady on reception was brilliant.

great place especially for Pilsner Urquell lovers but even being in Pilsen does not guarantee (as you would expect) that the beer will have everywhere outstanding quality. Some places, even on the main square, have definitely room for improvement. The Pilsner brewery is a must to visit.

Železná Ruda is a great base for seeing the Šumava/Böhmerwald national parks -- quiet but with a decent selection of shops and restaurants. On the Czech side of the border, we enjoyed catching the quaint single-seater chair lift up the Pancíř mountain. Over the border in Germany, we enjoyed taking the cable car up the Grosser Arber mountain and walking around the Arbersee lake. We visited at Easter, outside of the winter and summer seasons, so a few attractions were closed when we visited. There was still plenty to see and do, though.

My visit to Kašperské Hory was nothing short of amazing.

My visit to Kašperské Hory was nothing short of amazing. This charming city welcomed us with open arms, set against a backdrop of breathtaking nature that promises adventure and serenity in equal measure. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the city's vibrant atmosphere and the warmth of its people. Dining in Kašperské Hory was a highlight, with restaurants offering exquisite meals that showcase the best of local cuisine. Each dish was a delight, serving as a perfect end to our days spent exploring the surrounding natural beauty. But what truly sets Kašperské Hory apart is its rich tapestry of history and the abundance of educational walkways for tourists. These paths are not just walks; they are journeys through time, narrating stories of the past with every step. The pinnacle of our historical exploration was the visit to Kasperk Castle. Nestled quite close to Kašperské Hory, the castle stands as a testament to the area's fascinating history. Its majestic presence is complemented by the stories and legends that echo through its walls, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in the past. Another unforgettable experience was our trek to Pusty Hradek. The effort was rewarded with an awe-inspiring view of Castle Kasperk, a sight so magnificent it's etched in my memory. The panoramic vista from Pusty Hradek offers a unique perspective of the castle, framed by the natural splendor of the region, and highlights the harmonious blend of nature and history that Kašperské Hory embodies.

Plzen is a typical city from the former Austro-Hungarian empire with it's architecture being typical of the period. However one thing sets it apart from the many others in the region. This is the home of Pilsner Lager! The pilsner Urquell brewery dominates the town and the brewery tour is a must. I've been on lots of brewery tours around the world and thought I knew how beer was made, but this place has few surprises and taught me a few things I didn't know about my favourite beverage. The city centre is easy to get round by walking, and all the bars and restaurants are located near or just off the large main square. Most of the restaurants serve traditional Czech fair with stews, sausages, meats and dumplings being served.

A nice village with both a beautiful Czech National Park and a German national park nearby, and you can start hiking (is for me going uphill in nature) or cross-country skiing within 10-15 minutes walking from where I stayed. It has a brewery hotel on top of a ski slope, not too far walking from the town center, for those who love hiking. It hosts a number of restaurants, and Asian and Thai massages are an option as well. It is also a good starting point for cycling in the two national parks. Public transport for the Sumava national park towards the east is mainly by bus, and in the summer, and trains go mainly north toward Plzen and south into Germany, from where the train mainly goes either south or west, and to the east the bicycle or the bus can be used. The historic twin station with the bordering German town has a nice restaurant with some nice beer on tap.

The tourist information was very very helpful.

The tourist information was very very helpful. A lot of really-really nice reasonable cafes & restaurants, all within easy walking distance. The local grocery store closed by 18:00 (plan carefully!) A nice hike up to the Castle & around the area. Easy access by local bus, connecting you to Klatovy & Susice. The Castle hosts an AMAZING view, the "highest" in the region & rich with history!

Plzen is a lovely place to visit, if you have the choice choose here rather than Prague as it's friendlier and has a great brewery. Trains and buses from Prague don't take too long, are frequent and are really good value for money. Visit Zach's Pub while you're here for great beers and lots of stuff on the walls to look at.
