FAQs about hotels in Bavaria
Romantic Region of Castles and Christmas Markets
Home to some of the world’s oldest and finest Christmas markets, Bavaria is the German region touching Lake Constance and the Austrian and Czech borders. Although evoking images of beer, lederhosen and fairytale castles, it’s much, much more than that.
Famous for Oktoberfest, its capital Munich has impressive architecture lining squares and parks, and several luxury Bavaria hotels on Booking.com. To the north, Nuremberg is a city of 2 halves: a picture-postcard old town and grandiose Nazi rally grounds housing a sensitive museum.
With a stately palace and gardens, Erlangen is on the Regnitz River which continues to beautiful Bamberg where one of the half-timbered buildings hovers above the flowing river. Bayreuth is well-known for opera performances of Wagner, a former resident, while Regensburg on the Danube River has a beautiful, medieval centre.
Unsurprisingly, most romantic Bavaria hotels are on the Romantic Road between Würzburg, with its hilltop castle, and Füssen in the foothills of the Alps. Neighbouring Hohenschwangau has 2 royal castles, one of which – Neuschwanstein – inspired the Disney castle. Oberammergau has frescoed façades and hosts a 10-yearly Passion Play, and nearby Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a top German ski resort, with Tyrolean-style houses overlooked by Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain.
Back on the Romantic Road, Augsburg has colourful buildings, and Rothenburg ob der Tauber is like stepping back in time.

Munich is a fun city, I walked 6 miles thru the heart of downtown on a history tour. Stop off at the Lowenbrau bar and grill near the Oedensplatz downtown for some great beer, had not had Lowenbrau for ages and the beer was really good there.Guest review byodannyUnited States - Review score

It is a very beautiful large town full of old, traditional, often timber framed buildings and wonderful churches which are all in great condition. The whole centre is pedestrianised which is fantastic. The river Pegnitz, which runs through the town, and its green river banks and old bridges and buildings, adds to the relaxing and wonderful feel of the town. There is so much to see and to do. So much art too. The town is well cared for and loved. All the people, we spoke to, were very friendly and nice. We will certainly visit again.Guest review byHelga - Review score

lovely setting- even the train station has a vineyard as backdrop. the old town is compact and easy to walk around. Locals were very friendly Great place to wander and soak up the atmosphere Lots of history to learn about, loads of shops and cafes ( lots for vegans and vegetarians), wineries to visit ( Juliusspital has lovely building and garden) . Attractions include the Residence ( which has lovely grounds to wander in) and the Fortress, which also has walks around it. The city website https://www.wuerzburg.de/ is really useful ( and has version in English, including downloadable audiofiles for a self guided tour)Guest review byRuthUnited Kingdom - Review score
So many sights worth seeing.
So many sights worth seeing. Top is the Fuggerei, allow several hours to explore this ground breaking social housing from the 1500's. The Dom is also worth visiting as is taking the tram to the Red Tower and Water towers. Wander around the central area and enjoy a beer or coffee at one of the many coffee houses or beer taverns.Guest review byJacquelineUnited Kingdom - Review score

Fussen is a tourist town from which visitors visit the famous castles. Hotels give visitors "Fussern Cards" which entitle them to bus transport to the castles. Unfortunately the bus service between the railway station and the castles is horrible. Thsse busses are very infrequent and overcrowded.Guest review byBRUCEHAustralia - Review score
Garmisch is pure magic.
Garmisch is pure magic. We absolutely loved the fresh mountain air — it instantly lifts your spirits and clears your mind. The towering Alps surrounding the town are breathtaking, offering postcard-perfect views from every angle. Whether you're hiking, strolling through the charming streets, or just relaxing at a café, the atmosphere is peaceful and invigorating all at once. The blend of nature, fresh air, and traditional Bavarian charm makes it the perfect escape. Even just a few days here felt like a reset. Friendly locals, cozy spots to eat, and endless outdoor activities make it a destination we’d return to in a heartbeat. Garmisch has a special kind of energy; calm, welcoming, and wonderfully refreshing.Guest review byCharmaineGermany - Review score

In Passau, one can walk just about everywhere, but I'd take a taxi from the train station to your hotel. We loved Sello's cafe near St. Paul's church and The Ratskeller near the town hall. It was fun to look at the river cruise ships parked right along the village docks. Don't miss the hike to the old castle across the river as there is a spectacular view of the town from there.Guest review byRickUnited States - Review score

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is like being in a magical fairytale and as such attracts a huge number of tourists. Mostly American and Japanese. Try and go during off peak times as it gets ridiculously busy. It’s a very affluent town perhaps because many businesses insist on cash only. Be warned. There are so many fabulous sites in the town but try and walk down into the valley and along the river. It gives a vastly different perspective and is gorgeous too.Guest review byBradleyAustralia
