A Haven of Alpine Tranquillity
Surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Alps, Lake Como is a long, thin lake in the shape of an inverse ‘Y’. At its south-west corner is the beautiful town that it’s named after – Como. A short train ride from Milan, this is the starting point for several Lake Como cruises. If you take the funicular railway up to Brunate you get magnificent views of the lake and mountains, towards Switzerland just to the west.
The laidback and sophisticated way of life makes Como Lake popular with celebrities and several have homes in exclusive Bellagio, which is almost entirely surrounded by water. The views here are breathtaking, so it’s easy to see why of all the Lake Como hotels, Bellagio has the greatest concentration.
Just across the water are Lenno, Tremezzo and Menaggio, home to many exclusive lakefront hotels, many with swimming pools. You can actually swim in some parts of the lake, and the best beaches are found in the area near Gravedona in the north. Fanning out around a small harbour, this town offers some of the best Lake Como watersports.

This place is beautiful and I'm very pleased to have been however I think a week was too long. 4 to 5 days would have been perfect. Parking is very bad and roads are narrow and difficult. The quality of the food in restaurants is very poor and very expensive. The pizzas are very good but you don't want them every day. We found a great place on our last evening, Seta, in the centre of bellagio. If we had known earlier we would have eaten there every night. Google it! Lecco in my opinion, is a nice cheaper alternative to visit lake Como, with just enough things to not get bored. The center of it is nice, although if you go a bit more to the outskirts its industrial and not so nice/welcoming. This is a delight of Lake Como.
This is a delight of Lake Como. The crowds build during the day but not to the crazy levels of Bellagio or Varenna. It has a more fun vibe to it with mini golf and the promenade. The walk through the hills to the villages of Croce, Lenovo and others is well worth it. We turned into it a six hour historical and adventure walk. 13th century churches, beautiful cool forests, leaning towers, ancient paths, cliff side memorials and WW1 military trenches intact and restored. I’d definetly book this place again, great views. It was fairly easy to get to and from, bit of a long journey but didn’t mind. The staff were great and the other people staying were nice to very international and friendly oh and I loved seeing peoples dogs but I’m not sure if they were staying there? Beautiful and peaceful city. Pictures main square, with an interesting local market. Nice bars and restaurants near the coast. There is also a small port where it's possible to take a boat to explore Lake Como. A wonderful lakeside village, with a fantastic Moto Guzzi museum and tour, away from the hustle and bustle of Bellagio, a true gem in Lake Como. Pretty little lake side town across lake from Lecco. Easy walk of 25 mins to Lecco centre with plenty of local restaurants and supermarkets/marts within walking distance.
