Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaThe location is close to the train station but on the opposite direction than the old city. It’s not the worst but adds a little bit of walking to your daily steps.
We had a very pleasant and unique stay. The breakfast was delicious and so aesthetically presented, we enjoyed it a lot - on the first day it was more western and on the second day it was traditional. Both were excellent. Staff was very kind. The private onsen was heavenly. Laundry facilities were convenient.

AustraliaThe bathrooms are tiny, with a small shower cubicle, a separate toilet and a sink outside the bathroom. The only chair provided was what we would describe in the west as a low beach chair. The room needs a proper chair or small lounge to relax on. You have to walk through an open courtyard to get to the rooms at the back of the hotel. This involves shoes on and off multiple times. When you arrive in the foyer, change into slippers, get to the first door outside, change to outdoor slippers, get to the back part of the hotel, and put on inside slippers. When you go out, you do the same thing again. The hotel should consider enclosing the outdoor footpath into a corridor so you can keep your slippers on and not have to venture out into the cold to go to your room.
Ichinomatsu Japanese Modern Hotel is a lovely boutique hotel in Takayama. It's about a 10-minute walk to the town centre and 20 minutes to the Sanmachi-dori (historic area). Breakfast was included. We were told in the morning when we arrived at the dining room that it was a Western-style breakfast. So the hotel must alternate between Japanese and Western-style breakfast. The food was excellent. We stayed in a Japanese-style room with twin beds - more like mattresses on a tatami mat than traditional futons. The beds were comfortable, and the room was quiet. There was plenty of space for luggage. There is an onsen in a small structure in the hotel's courtyard. You can book a half-hour appointment for the onsen - and couples can use it together. You don't need more than half an hour - it's hot - and we were out after 20 minutes. We had a car, and parking was conveniently located 50m from the hotel.

MalaysiaParking slot is very limited to 5 max (was informed by hotel staff that 5 is hardly occupied). However overnight parking fees of ¥1,000 is rather steep. Signage of hotel is not prominent and only visible when near.
Hotel is kind of house-converted style with limited quantity of rooms. However room is clean, comfortable & tidy with all basic features like kettle, fridge, kimono.. etc Breakfast is included and served personally with a predetermined timeslot of 30mins decided by guest upon check-in. Onsen is small but of private usage via booking with the logbook.

AustraliaWe stayed only one night, room is clean although it could be better with the blind covering the window that open to the outside walkway (there is tinted window but at night it was not enough to keep the light out)

Everything! The welcome was amazing. Didn’t expect the service we received so it was fantastic! The private onsen you can book out for free (twice per day!) was a brilliant surprise after our day of traveling. Breakfast included was perfect. All the staff were so friendly and helpful which really was the cherry on top!

BrazilThe only small downside is the location, since it's not super close to the points of interest BUT it's just a short walk away. Straight line to Takayama station and nohi bus. It was not a big deal.
Such a beautiful modern ryokan. Very clean. Staff was super kind, they speak some english and it was enough. I loved the room with the garden view, wonderful! The outside onsen was a nice experience (no problem with tatoos or couples, very friendly for first timers). Delicious breakfast, it was japanese one day, western the next.

United KingdomWould have liked a little more space in the room.
The manager was so very helpful phoning a previous hotel for me to arrange for some lost property to be sent on. All the staff were lovely. Breakfast was a good experience as was the onsen, although not so much the evening it poured with rain.
