Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

BelgiumYou’re welcomed like you’re royalty! The property is beautiful and historic. You can even visit a little museum within the hotel itself. The staff is lovely. I knew beforehand that I wasn’t able to visit the public onsen due to my very visible tattooed arm. When I asked the staff, they were very helpful and offered me a fabric sleeve to cover up. In the end we only made use of our private onsen, so can’t comment on the public onsen :)

CanadaEverything! We love our own private bath area, it was very peaceful and serene. The food included (dinner and breakfast) were both exceptional! Staff very attentive and helpful. There was also a shuttle bus that ran between Gora Station and the hotel, made traveling around very easy.

United KingdomI booked for room and evening vegetarian meal, but on the third night was sent packing to the buffet at another hotel nearby because the chef had apparently run out of food or ideas for a vegetarian.
Idyllic location, comfortable rooms with a lot of character, nice onsen and staff helpful and friendly.

SpainAmazing experience! Staying here and doing the authentic ryokan experience was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan. It can be easily reached by local buses that are included in the Hakone Free Pass. The facilities, staff, dinner and breakfast, the private onsen and the room were amazing. Totally recommended!

United StatesThe incline was very steep, having to walk it multiple times a day & having blisters on my feet already was not a highlight. Also, we had an option for traditional Japanese breakfast or "Western" style. We did have the same option for dinner. We politely ate what we could & went to the convenience store for dinner. The 2nd night, we were there for 2 hrs to complete our meal since it was brought out in stages. It was very disorganized on night 2. So sad. Also, they asked us to wear the yukata they supplied to dinner each night. I couldn't even wear what I had brought, but there were no pajamas. All of the other hotels for the 2 weeks we were Japan, 4 different hotels before this one, supplied pajamas. I found that odd.
The staff was very sweet & helpful. Very thoughtful as well. The personal onsens we had were amazing! 2, to ourselves. They even took to see fireflies, free of charge nearby. So memorable. They even decorated a plate for us commemorating our 20th anniversary& made towel swans on the bed with "flower petals". The views on the property are breathtaking. Just a way to unplug from the world & enjoy yourself.

CanadaA guy at the reception told us that we had to arrive at 530pm for the dinner. We requested to change the time since it was too early for us but he firmly insisted that it was possible. Because of this dinner reservation, we were forced to return to the ryokan earlier. However, we were running late, so we were extremely stressed out about not making it to the dinner. We ended up arriving at 7pm and gave up having the dinner because the receptionist said that it's not possible to change our dinner time. This was not true! Other guests were dining at the restaurant so we asked if we can have our dinner. Friendly restaurant staff seated us and started to serve us. We suspect that the receptionist told us for the early reservation because we were traveling with a kid. Despite this unpleasant experience from one staff, I would still rate the property 4/5. Proper staff training and education are required to not discriminate travelers traveling with young children.

United StatesHakone has a great transportation system, but it still takes time to get around. We stayed here 2 nights so we could really enjoy the location - don't just spend 1 night. The internet is full of picky tourists that criticize old hotel buildings - this place is great and we really enjoyed our time here. None of our very minor criticisms are even worth mentioning.
The room was nice, and grounds/landscaping was exceptional. The (public) onsen was a delight and often with no other guests present. The building is very old and is absolutely charming. Chisuji Falls is a 10-minute walk away, and the Kowakidani gardens right across the street were beautiful. The Hakone Hot Spring Shrine at night was gorgeous (10-minute walk to neighboring hotel).

United StatesHumidity smell in room, the public onsen doesnt look very attractive.
Great service and ambiance. Room with private onsen was exceptional, just a bit of humidity and smell that was ventilated quickly (seems to be a thing in Ryokan/onsen). Dinner was incredible, including a Sake tasting, poured draft beer, and we missed the unlimited whiskey as we were very tired.

An amazing stay in Hakone!!! The ryokan is beautiful, and our villa with a private onsen was incredible. Public onsens also available and very nice. The interior of the room was lovely and comfortable and made for a very relaxing ambience. There was both a private onsen and dedicated indoor sauna bath for private use. The food was one of the highlights - both dinner and breakfast were delicious and varied. The staff were so helpful and friendly with everything we needed. The location was accessible via a bus from the lake, and an easy bus stop right outside to take you back to Odawara station. Great value and would love to stay again!

United KingdomThey offer a free shuttle service to Gora station, which is fantastic; but we were a party of 10 so they had to sit us up and do it in two trips. The first half of the party arrived at Gora within 10 minutes - Brilliant. The driver told us he would be picking the others up and to wait at the stop for them. The driver never arrived for the 2nd half of the party - despite them waiting for an hour and so ended up walking to Gora station. The outside public baths could also be a bit more picturesque - no nature in sight and quite small
A beautiful building and fabulous food. Staff were very friendly and it was a lovely place to relax and unwind in a very scenic setting. The location was great, easily accessible via bus from most places and no walking once off the bus!

United StatesThe dinners were delicious - there was just too much food! We ended up getting full after the sashimi course most nights. Definitely come with an appetite.
The outdoor onsen for our villa was just magical. The view of a little garden from the main area was beautiful, and there are bus stops very close as well to visit other areas.

United KingdomMaybe cover the breakfast fishes eyes, i felt sad.
Upon arrival to the local area, we decided to walk to the hotel, despite the bus being more convenient. This was a mistake and would not recommend it. However, despite us being sweaty and warm, the hotel welcomed us with open arms and a smile. Our room exceeded our expectations, feeling secluded and quiet, it truly was a sensation for the senses. We did not realise that the traditional attire provided by the hotel was for our evening meal/ breakfast, and the staff were more than happy to wait for us to run back to the room to change. This really added to the experience as I really did feel like a samurai. The meal was top notch and the waiters honestly could not have done enough for us. The bottle of Sake they recommended was amazing and tasted even better in our private Onsen (this isn't a brag i swear). The breakfast options were Western or traditional. We chose traditional and be warned, a fish will be staring at you during your breakfast experience. But don't feel bad, it tasted delicious. If I could summarise the whole experience, I honestly couldn't recommend this place enough. The staff even came out to give us an umbrella when we were leaving and catching a bus and it began raining.
