Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SwitzerlandThis was awesome ! Amazing place, amazing villa with equipment and hot bath inside and outside ! Great staff to assiste you, guide you, host and welcome you! Particular attention to even drop us at train station at our departure due to issues with buses. Food was really nice to discover the specialities of Japan cuisine and local secrets. Great memories and experience !

United KingdomNothing really.
Incredible experiences, from using the ryokan’s Onsen to the kaizeki dining experience. The whole ceremony of our stay was great and the first day we had to properly unwind after walking nearly 25-30k steps a day before that as we walked around the rest of Japan. A very enjoyable stay and something you really need to do a tourist. Public Onsen just down the road as well. The room was incredibly spacious and very comfortable, with a full tatami floor and great views.

United StatesSince it is a pricey hotel ( 300 usd/night) we found the food served at dinner and breakfast a little bit underwhelming. We love Japanese food, and have stayed in Ryokans before, but did not enjoy the food as much in this Ryokan.
Beautiful hotel, staff is very friendly and welcoming, quiet area next to Kowakien Yenessun. Both the Annex and the Main building have very beautiful rooms. The views are just breathtaking. As a couple we really liked their small private onsen.

ArgentinaWhile some guests may enjoy the abundance of food, I found it a bit overwhelming. I struggled to finish one plate, only to be presented with another shortly after. It felt a bit wasteful not being able to enjoy everything, and I would have preferred a smaller portion to fully appreciate each dish.
We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful traditional ryokan. The building is charming and surrounded by lush nature, creating a peaceful atmosphere. They provided us with comfortable yukatas to wear during our stay, which added to the authentic experience. The Onsen was fantastic—the water temperature was just perfect. Highly recommend for anyone seeking a serene getaway!

United KingdomMeal times became stressful for 2 reasons - we had young childred aged 3.5 and 1.5 and obviously expecting them to eat sushi or sashimi was not realistic. On day 1, we made it very clear that they could skip all the courses but simply offer the kids some corn, some rice, and some vegetables. You would think that would be clear, but we literally had to have this conversation every day and it became tiresome and also sad as our kids just couldnt eat much. Also my husband is vegetarian and had made it clear that he would take the Japanese veg option for breakfast but somehow every day that got messed up - day 1 i think he accidentally got both, day 2 they had forgotten so he had to wait a while... There was just generally alot of confusion amongst staff and many things clearly getting lost in translation. Would still highly highly recommend this but if you are travellign as a family just something to try and get ahead of (maybe write clear preferences ahead of your visit). THe other thing that was very odd was because we were travelling during the recent Typhoon Shan Shan, we were worried about whether the Ryokan was still functioning as normal as we knew Hakone had had heavy rains. we wrote many times to the hotel via the Booking.com msg service and noone responded to us for days. We finally got so desperate that the day we were travelling we started to call them and finally someone picked up adn said things were fine. Only after we had actually completed our stay someone (with a non japanese/east asian name) wrote to stay "hope you enjoyed your stay". Our conclusion is unlike most hotels maybe the custoemr service/messaging is with a different team/Head office? who clearly just avoided our messages (lest we decide to cancel our trip) adn conveniently only messaged us after we had left.
The meals were out of this world - breakfast and dinner which we paid for as the half board option were plentiful and mostly tasty however they did a really poor job of accomodating our kids needs and my husbands (veggie) despite multiple conversations over a stay of 3 nights/4 days (see below). The onsen in our villa (as well as the indoor one in the bathroom) were a real treat, our room opened into this little lush patch where birds sang every day, and the Ryokan is situated in a beautiful tranquil part high up. Absolutely delightful.

United StatesI don't think there was anything I didn't like, but I suppose I always have a hard time keeping the one size fits all slippers on.
Very welcoming and relaxing, traditional space. The onsens were all lovely, and the meals were very diverse and pretty. I particularly appreciated the room and the view. I wish we had more time here. I also appreciated the helpful staff, bag storage, and complimentary happy hour. I'd also recommend taking the nearest bus to whatever ropeway station is available.

United StatesWe had a toilet in the room, but to shower you needed to go to the onsen.
The place was beautiful, serene, comfortable, and quiet. The staff was very accommodating and aimed to please. The dinners and breakfast were delicious, and the meal presentation was elegant. The rooms were spacious and the bed was comfortable. The view from the room and balcony of the mountains was really nice. Too bad it was foggy and drizzling so we couldn’t appreciate it.

AustraliaThe reception and check in process wasn't very smooth or warm. We were very tired after travelling all day (we waited for nearly an hour for the bus at MotoHakone and had to stand all the way) and it would have been nice to have been greeted with a smile when we walked in, and be offered seats and a drink while were were waiting for others to check in. Instead we were just left standing there feeling ignored.
This was my kids' favourite stay during our trip. It was very easy to find if you catch the bus from MotoHakone, and get off at Kowakien, it's just a short 5 min walk. You can also catch a bus from right out the front of the ryokan that takes you all the way to Odawara station, although it got more packed with people and luggage as the trip progressed. Our room was very comfortable, with two western beds and one futon. The lighting was great with a bedside lamp and downlights (so that some can read while others sleep). Dinner was amazing, we had our own special space in a lovely dining room, and there were even some extra treats. For breakfast there was a choice of western or Japanese food, my kids really appreciated not having to eat rice and fish and loved the eggs and bacon and french toast with pastries. The onsen was great, I never saw anyone else the whole time I used them. There is a museum but it was a bit creepy at night as it is in a deserted part of the very old building.

AustraliaAbsolutely nothing . Thoroughly enjoyed it
This was my first experience of a Ryokan ,so can’t compare it with others . However the place was authentic , staff amazing so helpful and welcoming especially the 2 Nepalese women , food delicious and so well prepared , onsens tranquil , beds really comfortable . Also available free of charge is the onsen 10minutes away , which they told me allowed tattoos . I do have one across my stomach which I had to cover up . There was a sign at the Onsen saying no tattoos there but they did allow me in but I was very subtle to make sure it wasn’t seen . The hotel does have a private onsen also which seems quite available as it comes on a first come basis.

NetherlandsThe inside shower of our villa was a bit scary. At times we where afraid of falling through the wooden floor.
We had a villa with open air bath. The villa was in okay condition, the inside bath was a bit dated. The rest was great. The bed was comfortable. The staff friendly and helpful. Food was great. A dreamy place for our honeymoon. It's nice to have a little private house.
