Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

BrazilAbsolutely stunning! I loved everything about it, the room was great, the little balcony with the view is also nice, the traditional dinner and breakfast were delicious. Definitely would stay again in this hotel.

United StatesThe food was not great for the westerners palette. While we assumed this going in, it was very difficult for us to eat. I am usually pretty adventurous and will try anything, but even I left the table having not eaten much. It is a set menu, only modified for allergies. There were many times we found we did not know how to eat the dish properly, or we didn’t even know what each item was despite having a menu. It looked very nice and seemed high quality, just not our taste.
Loved the private open air onsen. The staff were very amazing and helpful. Great traditional Japanese ambiance. The beds were also very comfy, the best bed I’ve slept in so far!

Traditional Japanese in with old time, architectural features and more modern rooms. Seemingly remote on a hillside. But the rest of Hakone is accessible via the bus that stops right in front of the facility. To this American, the breakfast and dinner were elaborate, very interesting, and delicious.

United KingdomThe facility of hot spring is kind of old. Be careful of the iron plug of the pool. I got hurt when kneeled on it and my friend called the reception at like 11-12pm to find me some alcohol wipes. But we didn’t get through on the telephone to the reception. It caused a little bit inconvenience.
An ancient and beautiful architecture. The hot spring is super healing and the meals provided are delicious. The staff provided good services, helped us carrying our suitcases and checked the timetable of buses for us.

United KingdomYou must be joking
This was the highlight of our Japan experience, we were 'blown away' by the ambience, a very comfortable Japanese style room with a private open air onsen, the meals that were out of this world and the wonderful staff - what more could we have asked for?

United KingdomDinner and breakfast were both very traditional and may not be to all Western tourists tastes - but there was plenty to eat and they clearly used high quality ingredients so it was an interesting experience to try all the food options available. Ryokan felt very quiet when we were there, despite being fully booked, and we didn't meet any other guests while we were in the onsen or walking through the corridors - made it feel a little bit eerie.
Beautiful building and location. Very peaceful. Lovely staff. Rooms were very nice and traditional. Nice toiletries in room. Felt very luxurious. Private and public onsens were clean and quiet.

CanadaWe were not allowed in the public onsen, as we have tattoos. I am familiar with the taboos against tattoos in Japanese culture, so I made sure to book the private villa with our own onsen. I'm noting this mostly so other tattooed individuals can make sure they do the same! It would be nice to see people's minds opening to tattoos in the future.
This was my second time staying at this ryokan, and the experience was just as incredible as the last. I speak some Japanese, and the staff were able to meet me in the middle with their English. When you first arrive, you are able to rest and have tea and a snack while you fill out the necessary check-in forms. We were in the villas, so we ate our meals at the main building. There were a variety of times to choose from for meals, which was very convenient. We received incredible service the entire time, and our stay was comfortable and relaxing. Our private onsen's water stopped flowing one day, and it was fixed within 20 minutes! As I said to my partner regarding the staff "They do everything except let you help yourself," as even handing your plates back at dinner was met with gracious thanks. They have a wonderful store, great views of the mountainous foliage, easy access to the bus, and they provide lightweight yukata and geta shoes so you can fully experience Japanese onsen culture. There are many beautiful moths and butterflies in the gardens, as well as salamanders; we even were lucky enough to glimpse a tanuki!

CanadaThe staff were very helpful, friendly and polite and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The private onsen was clean and comfortable and the accompanying half board breakfast and dinner were fantastic. In addition, the staff took the time to ask about any food allergies and food restrictions which worked out well for us as one of our guests had dietary restrictions.

United StatesWe booked a 1-night stay in one of the private villas with both dinner and breakfast meal options. The private indoor and outdoor baths were the highlight of the cozy and inviting villa. Meals included translated menus. There is a private shuttle that does normal runs from Gora station to the inn and back. It does only run every half an hour or so, with a lunch break, but it's also easy enough to catch the local busses if you don't want to wait. Staff are extremely helpful and were comfortable conversing in English. We were also able to leave our luggage with the front desk on day 2 while we did the circuit.
