Perfect location to visit the countryside of Japan. This is the real Japan with Koi carpers swimming in river-like gutters and friendly helpfull villagers. On top of this, Kyoto is only half an hour away by train. We came for a nice, relaxing place to stay but got a family who was so warm and welcoming. Mizu, the hostess of Smile guesthouse is a very kind and helpful person who speaks good English. She helped and guided us to make our stay even better. The guest house is a traditional Japanese house. Beautiful and full of details. And next to that you can eat fresh strawberries at the Tanaberry farm, which is a 8 minutes walking distance. We can recommend everyone to stay here. As we immediately extended our stay the day we arrived and are planning to definitely stay again the next time we travel to Japan.

Basically has the whole place to myself, unsure if I was allowed to use the kitchen as it appeared to be a restaurant and a bar (but seemingly abandoned?). Bedroom was roomy and comfy.

The rooms are nice and clean. The owner was very kind. The location worked great for me as I preferred a place further away from the crowds but easily connected to Kyoto.

On arrival we saw the exterior of the building and it wasn’t exactly appealing but once inside it was a little gem, it’s more of a little house with everything that we needed. The beds were extremely comfortable, a nice lounge setting and an easy stroll to the castle.

Likes.... Free and convenient parking just below the apartment. Clean and comfortable. Free wifi. Big 3 rooms. 2 tatami rooms and 1 bedroom with 4 pax bed. Overall big bedrooms for sleeping. Can easily accommodate up to 10 pax ! Near to Hikone Castle For improvement.... Apartment is dated and needs some updates to kitchen. Can provide basic ingredients like cooking oil, salt & pepper.
