Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesElectronic entry keys, only because I lost mine temporarily (I later found it but decided to accept my penalty of an exorbitant fee and have the key for a souvenir)
It was very enjoyable experiencing traditional Japanese cuisine. The service was especially welcoming and I'm amazed at the respect, gratitude and attention afforded us by the entire staff.

United StatesSome former guests complained about the steep incline up to the ryokan. It might be a bit difficult for those with mobility issues.
Staying at this ryokan was truly the realization of a long-held dream. From the moment I arrived, I felt warmly welcomed. Check-in included a lovely snack and tea that set the tone for the rest of my stay. The highlight was undoubtedly the private outdoor bath attached to my room, offering a serene and immersive onsen experience in complete privacy. In addition, the ryokan features three reservable private baths (first-come, first-served) and a beautifully maintained communal bathhouse, giving plenty of options to relax and unwind. The food was exceptional. The multi-course kaiseki dinner and traditional Japanese breakfast were both delicious and beautifully presented. I appreciated how the menu shifted with seasonal ingredients, showcasing the chef’s attention to detail and freshness. Glad I decided to opt into meals. Another wonderful touch was the generous selection of snacks and drinks available throughout the ryokan, including alcohol. There was a convenient snack room on my floor, as well as a more extensive lounge in the basement. Spa treatments were also available, adding to the luxurious and restorative feel of the stay. This ryokan was clean and truly captured everything I hoped for in a traditional Japanese inn with hospitality, tranquility, and a deep connection to nature and culture. I wouldn’t hesitate to return. There is also a cable car that goes from Hakone Yumoto station to Gora station, and from there, it is three minute walk to the ryokan. It won’t show up on your Google maps so hot tip.

The facilities are nice and clean. The location is very convenient; it is only a few minutes walk away from Gora train station which has access to the the Hakone area train line and the cable car. PolandWestern-style breakfast was still more Japanese than Western View from the room to the parking lot After breakfast we decided to cancel the dinner reservation and we were charged a 5000 yen cancellation fee per person (we were not informed in advance that such a fee applies)
Great location Spacious room Many free drinks and snack bars and free late night ramen

PortugalIt was not bad, but this is just a suggestion. Me and my partner are not big breakfast people, we usually just drink something and eat a piece a fruit, but the hotel makes you choose between japanese or western breakfast. The issue for us it's that the breakfast is so big, they bring it to your table, but the amount of food for one person, could feed 3. We felt really bad because we could only eat a quarter of it and it was a lot of food waste. I feel like it would be better if guest could pick some items, instead of bringing everything to the table.
This has to be the best hotel I ever stayed in my life. The place was beautiful, super traditional and private. The staff was so kind and helpful, the room was very big, with so many ammeneties and possibilities. The private onsen was a big plus and totally worth the price, since it's only for you, but you still get the view of the nature around the hotel but no one sees you, it's totally private. Really regret not staying an extra night.

AustriaBest part of our trip so far. We booked a twin room with a private bath on the balcony and we used it to it's full potential! the rooms are full tatami with shoji screens - really brought us the feeling of being in a traditional ryokan as we have seen on TV. The room was incredibly spacious, the bathtub fit 2 people without problems and the balcony had 2 chairs and a table for enjoyable evenings/mornings. The possibility to borrow yukatas for the duration of the stay - free of charge - was a highlight. The private onsens were amazing as well, but we did use our private onsen more :) The staff was incredibly professional and polite. the room had good soundproofing. We ordered 1 dinner - kaiseki which consisted of 7 courses - each item was chosen by the chef with us having the option of choosing between 2-3 options. We ordered clam pot - which had only 1 clam which was a bit dissapointing. the free drinks (non-alcoholic as well as alcoholic) provided by the onsen were our highlight as well. We celebrated our honeymoon and the staff suprised us with a small gift, which made the stay even better. Cannot recommend this stay enough.

NetherlandsNothing, it was all perfect
Wow! This was an experience. From start to finish, there is a lot of attention to detail. The rooms were huge, the whole ryokan was beautiful, and a huge plus were the public and private onsen (and the one on our balcony!). We didn’t even have time to try it all. The traditional dinner and breakfast were also lovely (a bit much, though). I can just say one thing: book this, it’s worth the money. We should have stayed longer.

United StatesThe onsen pools were on the smaller side and not very hot..:( Wish there were room slippers instead of just socks to use to walk to the restaurant, since you need to leave your shoes at the entrance of hotel.
The exquisite traditional Japanese cuisine was the best I’ve ever had!!! The free bar downstairs with self serve drinks and snacks were a plus. The rooms were spacious with nice balconies with views of the mountain, small stream and trees were beautiful.

IsraelThere was a smell of seafood in the hallway on the third floor (around the elevators there was some fragrance that covered it).
The room was fantastic. The hot-springs water bath in our room was indulgent. We enjoyed wearing the yukata. The night ramen was a great touch, as was the free open bar and popsicles in B1F. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is beautiful.

This was a truly blissful experience. I visited with my Mum (in her 80s) and my sons (18 and 21). All of us had an amazing time and loved every second of it, from matcha tea ceremony, through beautiful serene bathing experiences, to the very high standard of cuisine at dinner and breakfast. Staff were really helpful and kind. The facilities are dreamy. So luxurious and relaxing but also a lot of fun - a real treat!
