The owner was super friendly and cooked some really high-quality meals featuring the local river fish. There is a small onsen in the hostel, a large one through a tunnel on the other side of the hill, but the outdoor one on the other side of the river was the most fun as as you can sit there together with your mixed gender partner/family/friends in bathing suits.

Hotel Kirinosato Takahara features outdoor and indoor hot spring baths, only a 2-minute walk from the World Heritage Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Routes.

We absolutely loved our stay here! The view from the property is absolutely breathtaking & enjoying it from the onsen was a highlight. The food was amazing - such high quality & quantity! The staff were also great - very helpful & made us feel very welcome.

We stayed here one night before leaving for the Kumano Kodo trail. The staff were really lovely. A couple spoke great English but most didn't speak any. They graciously organised a vegetarian dinner for me, which I leaned I should have requested in advance (oops). It's a slightly older hotel and seems to cater to an older crowd. I was able to cover my tattoos to use the onsen, but it seemed like maybe this is allowed on a case by case basis? The room was clean and comfortable, and the dinner was a very elaborate traditional Japanese meal. We walked the 50 minutes from Kii-Tanabe station and it was a fine and easy walk. The views from the room were lovely.

Staff are helpful and nice. Room is big and the meals are good. The beach is just outside the hotel and it's white sand is soft and lovely.
