Set within less than 1 km of Matsumoto Station and 4.3 km of The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum, Nunoya Ryokan offers rooms with air conditioning and a private bathroom in Matsumoto. When we arrived at the ryokan it was snowing and cold in Matsumoto. Our host immediately gave us towels and helped us feel welcome. She showed us around the ryokan. It was clean, warm, comfortable. The beds were like sleeping on clouds. The rooms were clean and it was wonderful sleeping in a traditional Japanese house. The shower was hot and powerful. The ryokan is located on a pretty road (Nakamachi Dori) with lots of interesting shops and restaurants. One of our favourite stays on this trip.

Housed in a historic building, the recently renovated Mitsubikiya features accommodation with a garden and free WiFi. The air-conditioned accommodation is 800 metres from Matsumoto Station. Traditional ryokan, very clean, calm and near Matsumoto castle. Personnel was very nice and helpfull.

Keiko San and his wife are very kind and friendly hosts, the food they prepare is delicious, the property is delightfully characterful with private onsen facilities, and in a magical forest setting looking on to its own waterfall. Keiko San very kindly picked us up from Nagiso station (and dropped us back there when we left), and took us to Magome and back from Tsumago on the day we walked the Nakasendo trail. He and his wife are great hosts.

Outstanding location, apartment and wonderful staff. The coffee and food in the downstairs cafe is very very good. Would definitely stay here again.

Offering an open-air bath and mountain view, Ryokan Warabino is set in Takayama, 12 km from Suzaka City Zoo and 24 km from Zenkoji Temple. Firstly we were greeted warmly as we came to check in. Everything was explained clearly and we get to choose the yukata with our size. The rooms are tatami style with a super comfortable futon. The food was a set of Japanese dishes that is really good and the onsen was awesome. Overall we love the authentic japanese ryokan experience.

26 km from Takato Joshi Park in Komagane, Hotel Yamabuki offers accommodation with access to a sauna, hot spring bath and public bath. Serene environment. Incredibly helpful staff. Onsen was the best!
